The Welsh Liberal Democrats say more and more students will be put off from going to University and those who do will be landed with huge debts, thanks to a decision by the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government to stop subsidising tuition fees.
Mike Powell, Parliamentary candidate for Pontypridd joined a group of students protesting outside the Assembly as AMs met to debate a motion from the Welsh Liberal Democrats to continue giving financial assistance to all Welsh students studying in Wales.
"Like many of the AMs in that Chamber I benefited from a grant when I went to University, and did not pay a penny towards the cost of the tuition fees. Today the majority of students leave with huge debts,
Plaid Cymru came in to the Assembly with a manifesto promise that they would not introduce Top Up fees. Yet with two exceptions they voted with their Labour colleagues to ensure future students will now face higher bills.
We need to provide a skilled workforce for this country if it is going to have a strong economic future. This means lots more vocational training for those who want it, and investment in courses such as plumbing, bricklaying and other construction related skills.
It also means ensuring those who wish to follow more academic routes into University can afford to do so. Thousands of students across Wales are now going to find it much harder to do so."
