The Welsh Liberal Democrats officially launched their European campaign this week ahead of the European election in June.
Their lead candidate Alan Butt Philip visited Pontypridd where the proposed regeneration of the town will rely heavily on European funding being made available.
"The Assembly Government sent back around £77million of European money to Brussels - money which could and should have been spent on regeneration projects bringing businesses and jobs to areas such as Pontypridd. It is disgraceful.
I understand that a bid has been submitted at long last in line with the latest plans for the town and hope that it is not too little too late. A thriving town centre will have knock on effects throughout the area.
Wales has suffered more than the rest of the UK from the effects of the recession, as a stroll through the town centre all too clearly shows. We have to make sure this does not happen again.
We need stricter controls on banks to prevent recent mistakes from recurring. We have to have more co-operation between national financial services and the European Central Bank "
Mike Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Pontypridd, says he hopes that people will use their vote on 4th June.
"Turn out for European elections is traditionally low, as many people cannot see the direct link between the Parliament there and their daily lives.
However, the European Parliament has been responsible for such things as ensuring all workers are entitled to paid holidays. Most of our environmental regulations come from there, with the result that we have cleaner air, rivers, beaches.
It is not Europe that has let us down, but the inability of the Labour Assembly Government to show any initiative or imagination in their use of huge amounts of money that were made available to us in Wales."
