Retailers in towns and cities throughout Wales were given a boost this Christmas by a flurry of last minute shoppers which have brought welcome relief to many businesses suffering because of the recession.
However, in Pontypridd shoppers were turning away and going elsewhere owing to parking problems and traffic congestion.
Cllr Mike Powell says that the Council have let down businesses yet again,
"Traders have suffered more than enough throughout this recession, and the decision of the Labour administration earlier this year to raise parking charges and introduce new ones has not helped.
"To compound this still further it seems no-one had the good sense to think of opening the Sardis Road car park on Sundays leading up to Christmas. This seemingly obvious measure would have greatly increased the number of spaces available.
"This car park is also widely used by staff who would of course have had to park in town instead in order to work Sunday."
Cllr Powell, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Pontypridd, added
"The town is losing enough trade already to out of town shopping centres and to Cardiff. The Council should be doing everything possible to encourage people to shop here all the year round.
The traffic congestion already puts many off, and longer term solutions are desperately needed."
