Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillors have expressed concern that a lack of routine highways maintenance will lead to more flooding misery for residents in Pontypridd.
Councillor John Bell represents the Treforest ward which was badly affected by floods in September 2008 and again last June. He says the same is likely to happen again
"The problems on the last two occasions have been made worse by the fact that the drains have been blocked and so there is nowhere for the water to go.
" I have asked Highways to provide me with a list of where every drain is in my ward but they have been unable to do so. How can they claim they are carrying out regular maintenance and cleaning when they cannot even say where they all are."
Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Mike Powell is the Councillor for Trallwn, which also saw extensive flooding.
"I know the Council are having to make cutbacks as a result of the poor budget settlement from the Assembly, but this problem is not a new one.
Neglecting routine maintenance, whether it be drain clearing or filling in potholes, only stores up longer term problems and leads to bigger bills eventually.
The Council shouldn't wait until an elected member rings them up complaining before they do anything - they should be sorting these out as a matter of course.
