Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Mike Powell is backing WWF's 'Earth Hour' campaign which urges everyone to switch off their lights justfor one hour on Saturday 27th March to show they care about climate change.
He has asked Council leader Russell Roberts to back the initiative by amongst other things switching off the lights on the Old Bridge and the Taff Vale Viaducts in Pontypridd.
"Last year people and organisations in over eighty countries took part in this initiative, and iconic buildings such as the Millennium Stadium, Caernarfon Castle, Big Ben, the Sydney opera House, and the Empire State Building went dark for an hour.
It is an easy way to show that you care about the future of the planet - just switch of your lights at 8.30 pm on the Sunday evening for an hour. Not only will you be taking part in one of the biggest events on the planet, but you'll save money too!
Two thirds of all local authorities in Wales signed up last year - I am hoping RCT will be one of them this year. World leaders missed out on the opportunity to agree a global climate deal in Copenhagen last year, and with each year they delay taking action the impacts on people and wildlife get more severe."
Anne Meikle, Head of WWF Cymru said "WWF's Earth Hour is an inspiring opportunity for people to do something positive to help tackle climate change. Last year's Earth Hour was the biggest ever climate change event. By making it even bigger this year, we can all send a strong message to world leaders that people around the globe are united in calling for decisive action on climate change."
