Mike with Town Cllr George Summers at the canal basin
Sainsbury's have submitted an application to build a new store on the sight of the former Brown Lennox site in Pontypridd.
The proposal includes food and non food sales, a café, and petrol station. A previous application by Morrisons on the same site was granted by RCT Development Control Committee in 2005 only to be overturned by the Assembly Planning Committee.
Cllr Mike Powell represents the Trallwn ward in which the site lies. As part of the Development Control Committee he is unable to comment on the overall scheme and its merits or otherwise, but says that this and any other major developer in RCT should be asked to contribute to the local regeneration.
"Any developer looking to build on this site should, in my opinion, be asked to make a financial contribution to improve the surrounding area. They should prove their commitment to the future regeneration of Pontypridd not only in retail terms, but as town people want to come and visit and spend time in.
I would like to see a 3 meter wide non- development strip imposed along the length of the canal that abuts the site and the removal of concrete where the existing site has encroached on the canal bank. There could then be a cycle path opened up alongside the canal.
There is a huge amount of history associated with the Glamorgan canal - and, to paraphrase RCT Council's logo we should be making much more of our strong heritage to promote a strong future for this town. Let's accentuate the positive and encourage more people to come to Pontypridd."
