Press Release: Shameless Labour

March 26, 2010 3:45 PM

Councillor Mike Powell, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrat alliance group on RCT Council has slammed the Labour administration for a "shameless disregard for the people they claim to represent."

Cllr Powell was speaking following a Council meeting on 24th March at which the Labour administration first voted themselves a pay increase and then decided three hours was long enough for a meeting to go on.

"They moved the item on Members pay and allowances up the agenda, and voted against a motion that this year's pay increase for Councillors be frozen. They claimed that as it was set by an Independent panel they had to take on board all their recommendations.

Interestingly enough Welsh Lib Dem lead Cardiff Council voted against accepting the increase owing to the current economic climate. This is not the first time allowances there have been frozen.

To put the icing on the cake, at eight o'clock - in the middle of a debate on the Community Strategy they voted to stop the meeting."

Council Standing Orders state that if a meeting lasts longer than three hours members have to vote on whether to continue. The majority of the Labour Group voted against, and so the meeting was adjourned.

Councillor Powell, who is the Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Pontypridd, said the actions of the ruling group were "Disgraceful."

"There were several items remaining on the agenda - including the Boundary Commission review. The response to that is due in by March 31st at the latest. These are the proposals which include merging Trallwn and The Graig and the Rhondda ward with Glyncoch.

The meeting will be reconvened, which will add to the cost for the taxpayer, as most Councillors - unlike myself - claim travel expenses to and from the Council office.

Their actions are disgraceful - at a time when they are cutting services, putting up costs, and increasing Council Tax above the average not only do they vote not to freeze the basic allowance, but they can't even manage to keep their attention on business past an arbitrary three hour mark."
