Ringing in the changes

May 28, 2010 2:45 PM

Residents of Tonteg have elected Welsh Liberal Democrat Elsie Bell as their new community councillor to represent them on Llantwit Fardre community council.

In a by election held on 27th May Elsie beat her Labour opponent by 518 votes to 386 to take the seat vacated by the previous Labour incumbent. She was delighted at the result

"I am thrilled that the people of Tonteg have seen fit to put their faith in me to represent them. I would like to thank all those who supported me and assure all residents of the ward that I will do my very best to ensure that the community council works for the benefit of the people."

Chair of RCT Welsh Liberal Democrats Karen Roberts said that Labour had "shot themselves in the foot" by running a purely negative campaign.

"The leaflet they put out criticised us for daring to force an election, claiming it is common practice for the party whose member had resigned to nominate someone else. This is not democracy, and is a mark of the level of arrogance that still seems to exist amongst the Labour party despite their recent huge drop in support.

I am sure that Councillor Bell will be an excellent representative and bring a refreshing new viewpoint to what is already a very good community council."
