Underground fire at Taff Vale Park

August 13, 2010 11:00 PM

Residents attending a public meeting on Friday were angry that no Council Officers were present to address their concerns about an underground fire at Taff Vale Park which has been burning for several weeks.

The fire has been smouldering on a former tip site to the rear of Parc Lewis Primary School since July, and whilst RCT Council are taking remedial action residents say they need more information

Treforest Councillor John Bell called the meeting and asked Officer to attend, but the request was declined.

" I share the frustration of residents in not knowing the full extent of what is happening here. Yes Officers have kept me in touch with their plans to try and remediate the problem, stopping it spreading and putting it out, but there are many more questions being raised.

The smell is awful in the area and people are worried that there may be harmful gases coming from the tip. Officers say they are monitoring it and it is harmless, but residents are not convinced and want to see air monitoring figures.

This site is right next to a Primary School, and parents at the meeting were asking for advice on whether it is safe for their children to attend school at the start of the new term. They want expert advice and are angry that the Council have done nothing but put a couple of letters through doors.

Two elderly residents have been admitted to hospital this week with breathing difficulties and whilst it may be a coincidence their neighbours need conceiving of that."

Residents are also concerned about the effect on their properties - the houses in the area are built on a former spoil site, which consists of vast quantities of coke and ash. Questions about the long term effect on their properties and the legal ramifications of that are all still to be answered.

Councillor Bell is to hold another meeting next Friday 20th August at the Reading Rooms, Taff Meadow Community Centre at 6pm. He will be contacting the Chief Executive to ask that this time Officers are there to answer the growing number of concerns.
