Labour Hypocrisy Over Allowances

September 29, 2010 11:22 PM

Labour Councillors in RCT have been branded "manipulative hypocrites" by the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrat group Cllr Mike Powell.

The attack came following a motion to Council from the Labour group calling for Councillors allowances to be frozen until 2012. The motion was almost identical to one put forward by Cllr Powell and his colleagues six months ago. Labour voted against it then.

Councillor Powell, who voted in favour of the freeze, said

"We called for this in March of this year, just prior to a pay increase being awarded following the review of the Independent Remuneration Panel. At that time the ruling group said that we should not be deciding allowance levels ourselves but should be guided by the panel.

Now six months later we have Labour showing their usual degree of hypocrisy and yet again trying to score cheap political points with a motion that stated:

"In advance of the expected cuts to public sector finances, which are set to be imposed by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat Government, this Council resolves to freeze the salaries and special responsibility allowances of Councillors at their current level for the remainder of this electoral term.

Cuts were necessary last year as well - or have they conveniently forgotten that? Then they laid the blame at the door of the Assembly - who incidentally are in charge of the Local Government budget!

It seems they are now desperate to try and claw back some modicum of support from the public. Yet they still remain determined to blame everyone but themselves and their colleagues for the current economic mess.

If they had voted for this when we first put it forward six months ago then a whole year's worth of increases would have been saved. This is not an attempt to make any real savings, instead it is a cynical move to try and fool the public into thinking they actually care."
