Letter to the press - Labour have such short memories

September 15, 2011 10:11 PM
By Mike Powell

First Cllr Webber - Pontypridd Observer letters page Aug 25th - and then Russell Roberts taking time out of one of his many jobs to write his newspaper column on 8th September. Both peddle the same tired messages - Labour good, Westminster Government bad.

They claim current cutbacks are entirely the fault of Westminster, apparently overlooking the fact that their budget comes from the Labour Welsh Government as it has for years.

Have they got such short memories, or do they just hope that others have? On 3rd January 2008 Jonathan Evans reported in this paper on the Council budget which was reported as disappointing and meant that frontline services would be affected. In the article Russell was quoted as saying

"We have approached Rhodri Morgan (Labour First Minister) and Ieuan Wyn Jones (Plaid Deputy First Minister) to try to get an increase but we haven't heard from them since. We do now face some serious challenges in terms of providing local services"

In a letter to the Local Government Minister Brian Gibbons (Labour) Russell wrote

"Given that the total Assembly pot is increasing by 4.8%, we are disappointed again with the lack of priority given to local government in the draft Assembly budget"

That would be the priority given to it by the Labour - Plaid Government at the Bay.

A year later and again Russell and co are complaining about the budget settlement. This time reporter Wayne Nowaczyk brought their outrage to public attention with talk of a £16million gap in finding.

"The totally inadequate level of Assembly support has now forced us into reviewing service provision and fees and charging arrangements." Said the Labour Council leader who continued

"The council's strong financial stability will not be comprised, which will ensure we maintain our core services that are being given short shrift by the politicians in Cardiff Bay."

CARDIFF BAY. The budget settlement from his Labour colleagues who he now tries to claim are blameless. And who was in power in Westminster at the time? Well let me see….oh yes, Labour. Somewhat hypocritical approach there don't you think?
