So the Cabinet Member for Economic Development plans to do 'absolutely nothing' about the fact that Labour's much publicised Townscape Enhancement Programme has failed to do anything to regenerate Pontypridd or indeed bring new business to the area.
A Freedom of Information request has revealed that despite the 'Love Ponty' website boasting of over 70 businesses having made enquiries about the scheme, only three have actually applied for a grant, and two have been awarded them.
In answer to a question I put to him at the full council meeting on January 25th about the low take up Cllr Cannon brushed it off with the by now expected Labour response - that it is the fault of the UK Government. Quite what input they have into the Pontypridd grant scheme I don't know.
When I then asked if he thought it was maybe that the process was too complicated or the criteria too strict and what he intended to do about it he answered that it wasn't complicated and that "I intend to do absolutely nothing."
So there you are then. He intends to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Except of course continue to pick up his £36K plus Council salary. At present only two premises have benefitted from the scheme. One an optician who moved across the road leaving behind an empty property in a poor state of repair. The other an office suite now occupied by the Plaid Assembly Member. So much for bringing in new jobs and attracting investment.
Cllr Cannon as we all know is putting his name into the ring for the Labour nomination for Police Commissioner. His mind is obviously already on that and he really doesn't care in the slightest about regenerating what they claim is the county town of RCT.
