Power is devolved in Wales: education, health, housing, economic development, local government - just some of the areas that are under the control of the Labour Welsh Government in Cardiff Bay. Welsh Liberal Democrats believe that the Welsh Government needs to do more with its devolved powers. It needs to do more to improve local economies and create jobs; to improve the NHS in Wales so that it delivers for patients; to improve education for our children; to improve public transport and the future of our environment. Led by Kirsty Williams AM, we currently hold 5 of the 60 seats in the National Assembly for Wales. Though a small group, our Assembly members are working hard to make a difference to the lives of people in Wales. Thanks to Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly members negotiating it into the 2011 - 2012 budget, the Pupil Deprivation Grant is putting millions of pounds of extra money into those schools that need it most. Schools in Rhondda Cynon Taff alone will receive an extra £3million. This was a key part of our manifesto in the 2011 Assembly elections and will make a big difference to children's lives. Our Assembly members were also able to persuade the Welsh Government to implement our policy of providing mortgage guarantees to first-time buyers. This should have been key in assisting people buying their first home, and helped boost the Welsh construction sector and reduce pressure on the social housing market. However, the Labour Government have failed to implement the policy as it was intended - yet again letting down the people of Wales. Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly members have also succeeded in influencing policy in Westminster, leading calls against Chancellor George Osborne's plans to extend regional pay in the public sector and introduce regional benefits; plans which would worsen the divide between rich and poor and hit Wales disproportionately hard. Welsh Liberal Democrats have ensured that our official UK party policy opposes these plans, which has forced George Osborne and the Conservatives to abandon them. Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly members will continue to work hard to deliver policies that build a fairer Wales and a fairer Britain. |
