Putting Liberal Values into Action in Westminster

Walking away from a coalition and allowing a Tory minority government, a snap election and then a Tory majority government was not an option in 2010.

A 'progressive' coalition where the electoral math didn't add up, with a Labour party who had no interest in one and who, let's not forget, had LOST the election, was not an option.

We did not win the 2010 general election; and despite getting 23% of the popular vote we have only 9% of the total MPs in Westminster.

In coalition, we have only 57 MPs to the Conservatives 306 - we are the junior partner and cannot do everything that we'd like to.

Yet our colleagues in Westminster are making a difference and winning real victories on policy - such as;

.

  • Making the tax system fairer by raising the income tax threshold to £10,000 a year and taking millions of low paid workers out of income tax altogether.
  • Ensuring that the richest pay a fairer share - for every £1 in tax cuts the Tories are giving the richest, £5 is being taken back in other tax rises.
  • Restoring civil liberties lost under Labour. Child detention, plans for ID cards and many other illiberal measures have been scrapped.
  • Continuing to stand up for civil liberties and freedom of speech by blocking the 'snoopers charter' plans to monitor everyone's online activity.
  • Standing up for workers rights and stopping Tory plans to roll back employment laws and allow employers to 'fire at will'.
  • Blocking Tory plans to introduce regional pay and benefits that would worsen the divide between rich and poor.
  • Stopping the Tories from introducing a ban on housing benefit for the under-25's, protecting young people who cannot rely on their parents to support them.
  • Introducing radical reforms to shared parental leave and flexible working, so that mums and dads can arrange their family life in a way that suits them best.
  • Making provision for mental health a priority, challenging stigma and ensuring modern talking therapies are available to all those who need them.
  • Ensuring that independent recommendations to reform the banks are being implemented in full and without delay.
  • Restoring the link between pensions and earnings and giving pensioners the most generous rise in their state pension in a generation.
  • Taking action on climate change with the Green Deal and the world's first Green Investment bank.
  • Fighting for equality and bringing forward proposals to introduce same-sex marriage.

.

These things are only happening because of Liberal Democrat influence in UK Coalition Government.
