Democracy an alien concept to Labour Party

May 22, 2010 11:45 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrats were angered by a Labour Party leaflet distributed in Tonteg which appeared to suggest they had a right to run Community Councils unchallenged.

The leaflet, distributed by Ray Butler on behalf of the Llantwit Fardre Labour Party as part of a by election campaign, claimed that the election was a waste of money. Chair of RCT Liberal Democrats Karen Roberts said their comments were "arrogant in the extreme."

"They stated that it is 'usual practice' when a community councillor leaves before the end of his / her term of office that their party nominates a replacement. Apparently they think we should have just had a quiet word with the Clerk of the Council and agreed to this rather than calling an election.

This is an absolutely ludicrous idea - do they have no concept of democracy? The people of Tonteg should have the right to elect someone to represent them. The Labour Party has run community councils along these lines for far too long.

One of their councillors leaves and behind the scenes another is ushered in. Many people never realise who their representatives are, let alone have the chance to select them."

The by election to Llantwit Fardre community council takes place on Thursday 27th May.
