Labour failing our Health Service

October 23, 2011 1:33 PM

Russell Roberts in his annual report tried to justify his position as Leader of the Council, Chair of the Police Authority and member of Cwm Taf Health Board by saying it strengthens relationships between those bodies and helps 'provide solutions to the problems we face.'

"We have made strong progress with the joint working agenda not just across the public sector locally but across our region, ensuring the full value of every pound is effectively invested in frontline services." His words.

Where though is the evidence of this? Recent figures revealed by Wales on Sunday show that so called 'bed blocking' is at its worst in Cwm Taf the Health Board which covers RCT and Merthyr.

The official term is 'delayed transfer of care.' It cover patients - mostly elderly - who have been admitted to hospital as an urgent case, have recovered medically, but who cannot be discharged until adequate after care is found for them either in a residential or care home, or by means of a social services care package, to allowing them to return to their own homes

This means hospital beds remain effectively out of action and new patients cannot be treated which means longer waiting lists. The overall number of hospital beds affected in Wales rose by an alarming 26% between 2010 and 2011. The worse figures came from Cwm Taf where 135,431 days were lost. How many patients have been left waiting in pain for operations because of this?

So much for joined up thinking and the advantages of having Russell as a paid member of Cwm Taf Health Board. Added to the dire shortage of medical staff which exists in this area the picture for anyone on a hospital waiting list in RCT is grim. Not to mention the poor unfortunates who find themselves stuck in hospital instead of being able to go home or to a more pleasant environment.

So much for Labour's empty promises to safeguard the Health Service in Wales.
