Disgrace of cancelled Council meetings - hardly leading by example

January 21, 2013 6:58 PM

RCT Council has announced the cancellation of all of this week's planned Council meetings, including the Cabinet meeting at which the budget for the coming year was to be discussed, because of the 'inclement weather,'

Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Powell said

"It is disgraceful that when the Council are claiming that they are endeavouring to go about business as usual and the majority of Council employees have made it in to work the same commitment is not being shown by the Labour Cabinet.

Amongst others we have had meals on wheels and home care staff walking miles in the snow all weekend to get to their clients whilst environmental services staff have been out clearing the highways, and an excellent job they have all done. Yet the Cabinet who are paid a considerable amount more than most of these staff cannot make it to Clydach for a meeting.

They even cancelled the development control meeting last Thursday before any snow at all had fallen and the roads were clear. If staff are expected to make it to work then Councillors should be as well. There is absolutely no reason at all for calling off these meetings. We are paid to do a job, and this is a part of it."
