An open letter to Owen Smith MP – devolution means Labour run Welsh Government.

March 6, 2013 10:30 AM

Dear Mr Smith

I realise that as the Shadow Secretary of State for Wales you feel the need to comment on some of the country wide issue which affect us all, but it was with incredulity that I read your recent comments in the press on standards of living in Wales.

You pointed out that the fall in living standards in Wales has been greater than most of Europe and that we have fallen behind other UK countries. Now I don't for one moment dispute your findings and I certainly agree with your comment that "It is particularly worrying that living standards in Wales have fallen more than the rest of the UK."

It is of course equally worrying that our education standards have fallen so far behind, and that our health service is failing. Wales is lagging behind on so many levels.

As usual, in common with most of your colleagues, you come out with the same lame old line - that it is all down to the UK coalition Government. Yet Owen, you seem to be missing one vital point, deliberately of course as it just doesn't fit with your narrative.

A little thing called devolution, which has seen Wales run by the Labour Party- whether alone or in coalition - since 1999. A Labour party which promises everything and delivers nothing. Who were elected on a promise to protect the people of Wales. Well just when do they intend to start doing that?

The fact that standards of living in Wales are lower than the rest of the UK can be laid firmly at the door of your own Labour colleagues. It is about time that they -and you - started taking some responsibility for your own failings.
