What price the Lido regeneration now?

December 19, 2013 9:41 PM

People living in the Pontypridd town area will feel doubly aggrieved following the announcement by RCT Council that they are to consult in January on phase 2 of their cuts programme which will see the closure of several leisure centres.

Llantwit Fardre leisure centre is earmarked for closure and Hawthorn leisure centre will operate at reduced hours with a proposal that Hawthorn High School be invited to take over Hawthorn swimming pool. Bronwydd pool in Porth is also likely to go.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Powell says it makes the decision to rebuild an open air pool on the former Lido site in Ynysangharad Park even more galling.

"For years we were told that Pontypridd had plenty of facilities within reasonable distance, that despite being the supposed county town of RCT it didn't warrant a leisure centre or indoor pool. The Lido was to provide something different. People in the Pontypridd area have shown clearly that they don't want the Lido as proposed. It seems now they are going to lose other accessible services too

Of course the Council's decision to decimate leisure services leaves the whole future of the Lido plans in doubt. It has been rumoured for some time that the project would move to the control of a private company fairly soon. Under the current circumstances it may be that would have to be looked at prior to development."
