Trouble ahead for Labour group as pay increase back on the cards

August 21, 2014 11:00 AM

Discontent amongst the Labour group on RCT Council is obviously growing by the day, as evidenced by the number of Labour Councillors who are queuing up to tip off the opposition i.e. us, about events behind the scenes.

A couple of weeks ago the press were leaked a story about a wage rise being planned for three Officers including Christian Hanagan. Mr Hanagan who is currently the Head of Strategy and Public Relations was recommended to receive a 15% pay increase. The son of Cabinet Member for Education Eudine, his current job was created especially for Mr Hanagan, who is a former Labour Council candidate. It was not advertised and he was simply promoted with no interview and with the Council reluctant to answer any questions as to the recruitment process.

A confidential report was put before Councillors at a meeting of the full Council asking them to endorse the recommendation of the Appointment panel that a 15% pay increase be awarded for alleged extra responsibilities he was to take on.

Following interest from the press and a hostile reaction from the public on social media a few rebel Labour Councillors managed to persuade enough of their colleagues that it was not a good idea to have it referred back to the panel.

Now, if some of those rebels are to be believed, it appears that the proposal is going to come back before the Labour group next week with a view to getting agreement for the increases to go ahead.

This could cause yet more discontent amongst the group. It is only to be hoped that this time those who are clearly disturbed by some of the things going on find the courage to speak out publicly and indeed consider their position as part of a group they feel so uncomfortable in.
