Still no news on Hawthorn Pool

February 3, 2015 2:06 PM

Almost a year since Hawthorn pool was closed the Council still haven't decided on its future. The pool was closed on 27th February last year at at time when the Council were looking to close several leisure centres and pools.

They have since decided to put a hold on other closures but Hawthorn still remains shut. Campaigners have failed to get support from their Labour AM and MP. Cllr Mike Powell says

"In July the Cabinet discussed a report which said that a further report would come forward in August. In September they decided Officers should talk to Hawthorn High School about transferring the pool to them.

"That has not happened and if the approach was made the School could not take over the pool without extra funding from the Council so I fail to see what the advantage to the Council would be.

"In the meantime people have to travel to Abercynon or Porth to swim. There is no pool at all within the Pontypridd town council area and that is disgraceful.

"Of course we have the promised Lido due to open later in the year. The Council seem to think an open air pool which will only be available for part of the year is a good enough substitute."

Residents have had no support from Hawthorn or Rhydyfelin or indeed any other Labour Councillor, nor from the Labour MP or AM for Pontypridd. As with everything else they continue to support their Council colleagues.
