Karen Roberts to stand for Welsh Liberal Democrats in the Rhondda

May 14, 2017 10:00 AM

Karen Roberts has been selected by members in RCT to be the Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for the Rhondda.

Karen was born and brought up in Clydach Vale and has a voluntary community record there that is second to none. Chair of the Cwmclydach Development Trust and a member of the Board of Directors of Lakeside Ltd (Cambrian Village Trust) she has been a key figure in making real improvements and bringing much needed facilities to the area.

A school governor of almost twenty years, Karen led the fight against removing the sixth forms from Tonypandy, Porth and Ferndale secondary schools and turning two of them into combined primary and secondary schools.

She stood up against the downgrading of the Royal Glamorgan hospital, initiated and approved by the Welsh Labour Government., taking the fight to the courts in an effort to get the decision overturned.

Along with her Welsh Liberal Democrat colleagues she joined parents to fight nursery education cuts which Labour pressed on with regardless of the views of the public and educationalists.
