Extra money must go to social care

November 1, 2018 8:33 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillors say that a significant proportion of the extra money coming in to Wales' coffers as a result of the Chancellor's budget should go into Local Government and in particular to help remedy the crisis in social care.

The extra money for the NHS in the Welsh Government budget was of course very welcome, but unless we also address the shortcomings in social care then we are just storing up more problems.

The social care sector is in crisis with insufficient funding and staff shortages. Despite general agreement that health and social care needs to be further integrated there has been little movement in that direction and with both sectors trying to stretch their budgets as far as possible then it is the individuals requiring those services who are suffering.

Bed blocking remains an issue when local authorities cannot provide the care at home people need to allow them to be discharged. Both services are nearing breaking point. More investment is desperately needed and the Welsh Government must put extra money into the Local Government budget to at least try and address some of the social care issues.
