Your candidate for the Rhondda Ward By-Election

June 8, 2019 12:51 PM

Following the sad death of Cllr Rob Smith there will be a by election on 4 July to elect a new representative for the Rhondda ward which covers MaesyCoed, Pwllgwaun, Hopkinstown, Pantygraigwen and part of Trehafod.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have selected Karen Roberts to contest the seat. A well-known name in local politics, Karen has been involved in many campaigns fighting for the rights of people in RCT particularly around schools and hospital services,

"I am hugely community focused and what drives me most is the concept of things that are simply not fair.

"It is not fair that education in RCT has become a postcode lottery because of Labour's decisions to close random sixth forms and create various through schools.

"It is not fair that hospital services are being stripped away from residents in RCT whilst the promised improvement that reorganisation was supposed to bring are very far off; that warning we have given for years of staff shortages and problems ahead have been ignored.

"It is not fair that social care is so underfunded and lacking in resources and vulnerable people are not getting the standard of care they so deserve.

"People deserve better, and those who know me will know that I am a tireless campaigner for better services, that once I get the bit between my teeth I don't let go. The people of the Rhondda ward deserve a representative who will get the potholes filled and dog mess cleared, but also looks at all the bigger issues that affect them daily."

Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Powell has worked alongside Karen for many years and says nobody could be a stronger representative.

"Karen has a fantastic record of community involvement and is a passionate advocate of fair play.

"Like me, she is never afraid to put her head above the parapet and speak up for the people of RCT and what is right.

"She would be a huge asset in the Council chamber helping to hold the administration to account and speaking up for the people of this ward and beyond."
