A better future for RCT

We firmly believe that Rhondda Cynon Taff deserves more at a local and national level. We have long argued that more has to be done to improve health services, town centres and job prospects in South Wales.

The cosy Labour consensus across every level of Government currently means there is no challenge from our AMs and MPs to anything and acceptance of poor standards of public service is becoming the norm. Just who is standing up for the people of RCT?

In the Pontypridd constituency at least we are firmly established as the only alternative to years of Labour Party complacency.

At county council level despite currently only having one County Councillor we regularly hold the ruling Labour administration and other elected members to account. We have spoken up against the waste of money which is so often a trademark of Labour's administration. We were vocal in the campaign to save our local sixth forms and have led calls to help town centre businesses by cutting car park charges and looking at business rate relief.

We were at the forefront of a long campaign to save the paddling pool in Ynysangharad Park and were appalled at the Labour attitude which ignored the voices of the public and went ahead and removed it. A referendum was held in the Pontypridd Town council area where 2077 people voted to keep the paddling pool and only 151 against but Labour contempt for the public has no bounds it seems.

We strongly opposed moves to reduce services at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, starting way back in 2008 when we worked with concerned parents and staff to try and prevent the downgrading of the neonatal unit there. Whilst local Labour politicians waved banners against it and posed for photo shoots it is their own colleague the Labour Health Minister who gave the go ahead for it to happen.

Cllr Mike Powell and Campaign Manager Karen Roberts in particular were very involved in the fight against RCT Labour Council's decision to cut nursery education - a decision deemed by a High Court Judge to be unlawful following a judicial review. Labour Councillors all backed the decision of their Cabinet - as did the local Labour AMs and MPs

Cllr Mike Powell is currently our sole voice on RCT council. First elected in 1999 he continues to work hard not just for residents of his own ward but right across Rhondda Cynon Taff. Mike Powell's no-nonsense approach makes him a constant thorn in Labour's side; their persistent attempts to unseat him scuppered by his popularity and reputation as a man who cares for his community.

We want a better future for this area and the people in it. RCT is at the bottom of all the wrong league tables - highest unemployment, poorest health, fewer pupils attaining good GCSE grades. It is not good enough - we deserve better.
